Preparing your body for Winter.

I am a Huge believer in keeping your gut healthy. A major portion of your immune system lies in your intestines. If your gut is healthy, you have a much better chance of warding off illnesses and staying well.  

 

With Cold and Flu season fast approaching, I like to stock my freezer with some jars of rich and healthy bone broth. I use grass fed beef bones or organic free range chicken bones and a few organic veggies, like onions, garlic, carrots, parsley, and celery. You can also add some ginger root, rosemary, dried mushrooms, or other herbs. Roasting the bones first at 350* for 20 minutes brings out nice flavor in the bones. Cover all of your chosen goodies with fresh water in a crock pot set at low for about 24 hours, or on the stove top on low in a heavy stainless steal pot covered with a lid.  Strain the broth, and cool before freezing.

 

It's a great idea to  divide the broth into several freezer safe containers, then If you feel a bug coming on, defrost some stock to heat up and sip on or add to a favorite soup recipe. This is also a great way to help calm bouts of digestive issues as well. I am convinced, that this is one of the best things you can have in your home, during the winter for everybody in your family.
